Social Studies: Introducing Ruby Bridges Through Bravery
Using the idea of bravery as a framework for understanding Ruby Bridges's experience, students discussed what it looks like to be brave. I recorded their observations in a brave chart before reading aloud The Story of Ruby Bridges. To review, we made a Ruby Bridges chart outlining characteristics and attributes of the historical figure. I introduced Norman Rockwell's painting, "The Problem We All Live With," to the students, which elicited several questions and discussion about why Ruby was treated so poorly, and why she is considered brave today. Culminating the lesson, students chose from and wrote about one of the following topics: a time when they were brave, when someone they knew was brave, or why Ruby Bridges was brave. |
